7 common situations when to use a freelance copywriter

Yep – everyone can write!

You’ve probably been doing it all day and you’ve been writing since you were at school. So, why hire a freelance copywriter?! You’ve got this.

But then…

Why hire a cleaner when you can (probably) clean?
Why hire a designer when you can (maybe) design yourself?
Why hire an accountant when you can spend hours working out what to claim on tax yourself?

It’s the same thing with a professional marketing copywriter.

So, why would someone consider hiring a copywriter?

Here are 7 daily business scenarios that you’ll encounter as the perfect reasons to consider the services of a copywriter.

Ahhh, that one fundamental question.

As a professional marketing copywriter, I get asked sometimes why people hire me.

“Your clients can write, and they know their own product and customer. So, what further value do you offer?”

It’s a great question. One that I have no problem answering.

You see, if you’re considering a poor-quality copywriter, then yes, the answer is none. After all, you get what you pay for and if you’re paying a tiny fee, then you may as well write it yourself.

But for a high-quality copywriter, the answer is really easy: there are so many valuable benefits of using a copywriter.

However, a better question to ask is not “why”, but “when”.

You see – copywriting services are always on hand for any business.

So, it’s not about why you need them, but when you need them to help you. Let’s rephrase the question a little here.

When do you hire anyone?

Think about when you’ve reached out for assistance.

When you outsource a service, from office cleaning to bookkeeping, real estate agents to marketing agencies, you’re doing it because it means you don’t have to do it yourself – for whatever reason.

Hiring a freelance service means you don’t have to do it for yourself – for whatever reason.

Sure, you can clean your office, do your books, sell your home or devise a marketing strategy, but there may be times or valid reasons where you don’t want to do these things.
That’s when you outsource to an external service provider to do these tasks in your place. It works the same with copywriting. If you find yourself saying: “I don’t want to write the copy myself”, THAT’S when you need to hire a copywriter.

If you find yourself saying: “I don’t want to write the copy myself”, THAT’S when you need to hire a copywriter.

Let me give you some very common business situations that I’m sure you’ll relate to.

These are the 7 scenarios when you should consider a copywriter because the benefits far outweigh the costs.

When to hire a freelance copywriter?

1. You don’t enjoy writing

Everyone can write but you may absolutely hate it! If you would rather do anything in the world than write marketing content or compose business communications, then just reach out to a freelance copywriting expert who can take this off your hands.

That way, you know your writing requirements are with someone who has the passion for copywriting to do a good job, rather than you slogging through a task you really dislike and getting the results you’d expect from this.

2. You can’t find the time to write

This is a very common challenge. You may like writing, but if you have no time, then just outsource it to a freelance marketing copywriter. Your time is better spent growing the business or focusing on what you need to do, rather than spreading yourself too thin.

Don’t let your projects blow out because “you’ll get to the writing”.

You’ll find yourself saying the same thing for months.

If you’re in denial about time, this could be costing you more than you realise. I have many clients who say: I’ll write the website. Then six months later, there’s no website and they come to me asking for me to just get it done.

Don’t let a lack of time hold you back.

3. You’re not earning the results you were expecting

Just like you can paint your house or do your own taxes, when you try it yourself, you will probably find that you’re not getting the results you were hoping for. That’s because you don’t specialise in these tasks and do them every day.

A freelance copywriter spends every day copywriting to get results. So just leverage their expertise and benefit from their years of experience – especially if you’re not getting a good outcome yourself.

Why spend hours of practice trying to get good at writing, when you can “cheat” by paying someone who has already done the hard yards to do it on your behalf?

4. You’re not sure what to write

This happens a lot for many businesses. They’re told to write case study content by their sales teams, the marketing teams are requesting more blogs for SEO purposes and the customer service team want more written collateral to give to clients.

So, you know you need to write. But not sure what to write.

A high-quality copywriter is ideal here because we can provide you with marketing guidance based on your scenario and join the dots to get you on the right track. A marketing copywriter can also provide you with more direction around your brand’s messaging.

5. You’re not sure how to write

Here, you know your topics and your content goals, but you’re unsure how to tailor your writing in a way that engages your audience. This scenario is a tricky one to spot at first, because you have everything you seemingly require at the start.

But then, you get a bit stuck along the way because you’re not sure how to write.

After all – writing an email or a memo is leagues apart from writing a website or a landing page designed to make sales.

In this instance, you can really easily brief a copywriter in! Because you have all the foundations ready. Let your freelance copywriter manage the “how to copywrite” part.

6. You need some fresh eyes on your work

So, you have a first draft. But you need an external perspective to provide an unbiased assessment on your written content. Again, an experienced copywriter can come in with a fresh set of eyes to help you make edits so that your content is the best it can be.

7. You see the value in content marketing

Content marketing is a highly effective marketing practise today. However, the content engine is fuelled by strong copywriting. If you’re serious about getting the best results, then you need to be committed to creating fresh, quality content.

This takes a lot of hours to do – hours you and the team may not have.

However, if you get a freelance copywriter in, they can work around your needs and requirements without having to hire a costly full-time position.
