Checklist: Can I write my own copy?
Ask yourself these 10 questions to see if you can be your own wordsmith.
All businesses must create written content to communicate with audiences, educate leads, convert customers and nurture clients.
This is done through the words on your website, blogs, video scripts, landing pages, emails and more.
But can you write your own copy? Or do you need to hire a freelance copywriter?
Here is a copywriting checklist to help you decide if you can do your own copywriting for your business.
1. Do you have the time to write engaging copy?
Copywriting takes a lot of time and many rounds of changes to get each piece of content into a state that’s ready to go out to your customers.
Do you have the hours needed right now?
2. Do you have time to practise your copywriting skills?
Just like anything else, the skills required to write effective pieces of copy are learned through hours, weeks, months and even years of practise.
Is this something you’re ready to dedicate yourself to?
3. Can you write in the tone and language your audience uses?
To address your customer’s needs, you must ensure that your content is conversational, relatable and easy to understand – helping them to learn more about your business and what you have to offer. Unfortunately, this can be hard when you work within your business every day and have knowledge that your customer doesn’t know or won’t understand.
Are you able to write in a customer-relevant way without assuming all your business knowledge and level of understanding?
4. Can you write impactful and attention-grabbing headlines?
Headlines are your audience’s ‘door’ into the rest of your content. If your titles are dull, vague and meaningless, you may get ignored.
Are you able to communicate what you do in sharp and concise ways?
5. Can you promote benefits rather than features?
Your potential and current customers only care about the relevant benefits that you offer them – and far less about the features and other superfluous information.
Are you able to distil and communicate how you make your customers’ lives better? In a way they will recognise and appreciate?
6. Can you create content that is scannable and easy to read?
People today are always on the go and their busy lifestyles discourage them from reading lengthy pieces of content.
Do you know how to layout your content to maximise User Experience?
7. Can you appeal to your readers’ emotions?
People don’t make purely logical decisions when they buy. It’s more about the way you influence their emotions that will drive them to act.
Are you able to hit emotional triggers that will encourage customers to convert?
8. Can you address your audience’s objections?
Your customers want a perfect solution for their pain points – and that means they’ll research all the options.
Are you able to identify the right messages that will reassure them?
9. Can you write without spelling and grammar errors?
Mistakes in grammar and spelling when writing your content can ruin your credibility and distract your audience.
Are you able to keep your copywriting error-free and easy to read?
10. Can you write content that is Search Engine Optimised?
Most written content is published online today. But no matter how good it is, it won’t do much good unless it reaches your audience when they’re hunting online.
Are you able to write so that it includes the correct SEO keywords to get picked up by Google and other search engines?
How did you go with the checklist?
Can you do your own copywriting?
Just remember that general writing and copywriting are very different things. Managing your business or running your department may be your specialty – but it doesn’t always mean it’s easy to communicate what you do in a way that inspires customer action.
Creating engaging content is extremely important for your business – but it’s perfectly okay if you don’t have the time and resources to write it yourself.
