How long does copywriting take?

It's a very common and fair question, but the answer is a little difficult because every project is different.

However, what I do know is that it's very easy to underestimate because it's a specialised kind of writing.

So, how do you know how long it takes to write strong copy?

Consider this.

Your business needs a piece of content written, whether it's for an article, a video or even an audio Podcast, because you need to communicate to your audience to raise awareness and generate interest.

So, you give this to a copywriter and they get started.

It's just writing, right? It shouldn't take that long.

Well, that's the issue here. As I said, it's very easy to underestimate how long quality copywriting can take to compose. As a result, most people think it takes a lot less time than it really does.

Want to know why?

It's because copywriting is not just any writing.

Copywriting is a very specialised form, with specific objectives that it needs to achieve. 

It's not a scribbled down note or a passing sentence. It needs to engage and provoke a high level of response from an audience, and this is no mean feat. 

It's easy to see how people can under-appreciate the time it takes. It's because everyone writes every single day.

We write emails, memos, notes, messages, social media posts and so on. We've studied how to communicate ever since we were children and we know how to form sentences and get our general point across.  But this is the very reason why it's easy to take copywriting for granted.

So, what makes copywriting different?

Copywriting, when used for Marketing and business purposes, is the text written to convey a message to inspire customer action. It's about selling a concept, idea or product by tapping into a customer demographic's pain point and offering them a solution that compels them to act.


Your words need to give them a reason to part with two of their most precious resources- time and money- because you've explained the advantages of your solution and convinced them of the benefits.

People today are time poor, bombarded and busy.

They don't accept just any piece of marketing content. In fact, everyone today is highly empowered, suspicious and protective of their time. They have no tolerance for anything that doesn't help them in some way.

This means that if your business wants to reach them, you need high-quality content that interests them and offers them real value. You can't compose something like this in a matter of minutes.

Good copywriting takes time to craft.


For every single project, it takes time to:
  • Identify the ideal target customer
  • Research the market and learn about the product
  • Connect your audience's needs with the solution you provide
  • Suggest and plan out the right medium
  • Devise the perfect composition, flow and formatting
  • To write and re-write
  • Evaluate the final piece of content and make polishing edits

ALL of these steps need to be taken by a copywriter. For each and every project.

Your customer's time and attention is valuable to both them and you - so you have to be clever in how you select your words. This takes time. 

Ask yourself this:

Your business' overall profit, cash flow and success is heavily reliant on your customer making an action based on the messages you put in front of them.

Do you really want to leave such a crucial task to someone who rushed through it?

Do you really want to rely on content that was written without fully taking into account your industry, your customer's needs or your products?

I certainly wouldn't! Neither should you.
