One thing I find in long novels (especially within the fantasy genre), is the sheer amount of characters, and their respective fleeting description you get of them when first introduced.
I always find myself just remembering their names and their vague appearance but not really focusing too much on it as I can't really recall their descriptions from chapter one. This has bothered me a little and I've tried to remedy this in the books I write.
So, I've tried putting subtle reminders of just the major characters every few chapters to help the reader keep the image fresh in their minds. I want them to think "Oh... right, that's right, he is that one," etc.
What are people's thoughts on this?
Keep in mind, I'm not just reintroducing the character every few chapters. I'm more just reminding them subtly of small things like hair colour or unique features.
