With the year drawing to a close, are you happy with your last 365 days?
It just seems like each year is disappearing faster than the last, and short of being able to control time itself, the best way to ensure that we are making the most of our time is... well, just that: making the most of our time.
I know that it's a cliché, end-of-the-year post, but I really want to drive home the message here: the world is your oyster, and only you can unlock your true potential each year.
So ask yourself the following questions:
(1) Did you set realistic goals this year?
(2) Did you achieve them or at least go out of your way to make some progress?
(3) Did this year bring about exactly what you wanted? (in any aspect like romance, career, self-improvements, etc.)
(4) Did something unexpected happen, yet you dealt with it in the best way you could have?
(5) Are you happy with the majority of your decisions you made during the year?
(6) Was this year a success?
If you answered “yes” honestly to the above questions, then congratulations! You should be proud of yourself and take comfort in the fact that this year was a significant contributor to your life. That's great!
If you were less than successful, well, hey... we're all not perfect. But, if you're reading this post looking for a sympathy excuse, well, that's not what this is about! This is about administering some tough love, in order to get everyone motivated to learn from your shortcomings, and to get you back in shape to conquer next year instead!
There's so many opportunities out there for us all to learn, experience and discover, and yet I seem to hear the same thing over and over: "I wasted this year". So now, in late December when everyone is reflecting back on the year that was, take the time to ask yourself what you really want over your next twelve months. What do you need to do to get you that one step closer to ultimate fulfilment?
Here are some tips when planning what next year will hold for you:
(1) Set realistic, but 'stretch' goals
(2) Write them down! Being able to constantly see and monitor your goals really really helps
(2) Give yourself solid deadlines, and spread them out (and not just Dec 31st)
(3) Reward yourself for each milestone you reach
(4) Stop making excuses; only you end up suffering
(5) Don't lie to yourself: know what is reasonable and start with that
(6) Evaluate what's important to you, and no one else
(7) ACTION; don't wait. Make something happen.
Remember Buddha's famous quote: "The trouble is, you think you have time." That quote gives me goose bumps, and for good reason, too. Think forward to your future self, sitting where you are now, looking at another year gone by; what do you want them to be thinking?
